Tips for Braiding Your Child’s Hair

It is difficult to find the right braiding style for your child as the braid would depend on your child’s hair type, activity levels and so on. Some of the more common and popular braiding styles include straight braids, where depending upon the length and thickness of the child’s hair, you can settle for one or two braids. Straight braids are suitable for everyday wear and can be coiled up and twisted and even worn on top of the head. French braids are interwoven much closer to the scalp than straight braids and can be done every day or just for formal occasions. Children love micro braids where several tiny braids are woven from just a few strands of hair. These braids are worn all over the head and can be kept for a longer period of time. The up-do braid style involves individual braids being piled up into a classic up-do. If you wish to go in for the informal look, sloppy braids are best as they are to only casual but also quick and easy to do.

Tips and Tricks for Braiding your Child’s Hair

There are a few steps that you will have to follow before braiding your child’s hair. Use a mild shampoo on her hair and wash and rinse it thoroughly. Detangle the hair gently with your fingers and then comb it straight out with a wide toothed comb. You can apply a leave on conditioner to it and then blow dry her hair. Smoothen her hair and then divide it into three even sections.

Hold the left section between your thumb and left index finger. Leave the middle section free and hold the right section between your right index finger and thumb. Rotate from right to left and alter the centre piece with each braid. Keep each braided section even by paying attention to the tension and smoothness of each section. Children are active throughout the day, hence it is necessary to make a tight braid and this can be done by pulling the middle section horizontally as you pull it to the left or right. The ends of the braid must be tied securely by using a barrette or a coated elastic band. In case your child’s hair is brittle or extremely fine, it is best to avoid tight braids. The whole process of braiding should be as gentle as possible as a child’s scalp is extremely sensitive and delicate. A regular hair wash is required if the braids are worn for longer than two days.
