What Causes Split Ends?

Split ends are the bane of most women with long hair. Medically known as trichoptilosis, split ends occur usually when one avoids trimming one’s hair on a regular basis. Once your hair gets to a certain length, the cuticle tends to break and the inner layers become exposed and get damaged. The hair strand usually breaks into two or three individual strands and begins to spread further up the hair and cause great damage to hair. The first and the most basic of split ends remedies is to ensure that you get your hair cut at regular intervals. You can go to a salon for this or even trim your hair at home. What you will need to do is to hold your hair firmly and then twist in a downward direction which will make the split ends stand out. You can then cut them off.

Natural Remedies For Split Ends

Split ends are also more likely to develop in hair that is typically dry or is brittle. There are a number of natural remedies for split ends that you could use. You should ensure that you oil your hair at least twice a week with hot oil. This is a good home remedy for dry hair and split ends. Another one of the many good home remedies for split ends is applying a mixture of egg yolk, olive oil, and honey. In a bowl, mix together one tablespoon of honey and olive oil respectively with the yolk of one egg. Ensure that all three ingredients are mixed together very well and then take small amounts of this and apply it in different sections of your hair. You should then put a shower cap on and allow this mixture to remain for about 20 to 30 minutes. You can also make use of moisturizing masks. In a bowl, mash up a medium sized avocado and apply it to your hair. Ensure that your hair is damp while you are doing this. If you are not able to use avocado, you could always use mayonnaise as a substitute.

You should also take a number of common sense precautions such as not combing your hair when it is wet because this only damages it further. If you have dry hair, it is recommended that you do not use hair styling equipment such hair dryers and curling irons as this will weaken your hair considerably. You should use cold water to wash your hair.

What Causes Split Ends - How to Prevent Split Ends

Split ends are a common hair concern and, depending on how important the look of your hair is to you, could even be considered a “hair emergency”. You will notice that spilt ends occur more often on people with dry hair rather than on people with well maintained hair. This is by no means a coincidence, and highlights the fact that one of the causes of the issue is a lack of well nourished hair. Hair is made up of almost the same cells that make up the skin. While taking care of the hair equates to picking up the right hair care product from the supermarket shelf for most people you meet, the issue will at times, need more drastic measures than that. Since spilt ends are caused when the cuticle, or protective layer of the hair, is removed from the tip of the shaft. This inevitably causes the hair to split into two or more strands and, if this remains neglected, will start to happen to the entire strand of hair right up to the scalp. If you do not feel that this should be a problem, imagine the same happening to every hair on your head, which is a very likely outcome.

The hair receives its nutrition through digested food. As a result, the best way of taking long term care of your hair is to eat a healthy and nutritious diet. A diet containing high amount of B Vitamins like B6, folic acid, biotin and inositol as well as minerals like magnesium, sulphur and zinc, would help support your cause. Hair damage, which could result in split ends, can also occur as a direct result of the strain put on the hair follicle during the use of hair dryers and blow dryers. If you hair has been extensively damaged as a result of the excessive exposure of your hair to these instruments, you might need to repair the damage with the help of hot oil treatments. These treatments will restore your hair to a much better overall health.

Once the split ends have occurred, however, there is really not much that can be done for that portion of the hair and the most common choice is to have your hair trimmed. While there are a number of products available at cosmetic stores, they will only prove to be temporary fixes. You should also avoid brushing your hair while it is still wet after a shower as this will increase the likelihood of split end occurrences.
