Causes of premature gray hair

As one grows older, his/her hair starts losing its natural color and turns gray. But sometimes, the sebaceous glands responsible for imparting color to the hair produce insufficient amounts of sebum and cause hair to turn gray prematurely. This condition may affect someone as early as in their teens. The main reasons behind premature graying of hair are mental stress and anxiety, and deficiency of minerals like iron, copper and iodine and of vitamin B in the diet. Heredity also acts as a contributing factor in such cases.

Gray Hair Remedies

There are a few simple remedies that you may follow at home to treat this condition. One of the simplest ways of restoring color to graying hair is to chew a few fresh curry leaves every morning. You may also use curry leaves as a flavoring agent in cooked food, or crush a handful of these leaves and add their juice to a cup of buttermilk and drink this mixture every day. Alternatively, boil a handful of curry leaves in a cup of coconut oil for 10 minutes, strain the liquid extract into a bottle and massage your scalp with this decoction every day. In a few weeks color will start returning to your hair. Indian gooseberry is also highly effective in solving the problem of premature graying. You should cut these berries into small pieces, dry them out in shade, boil them in coconut oil till a dark sediment settles at the bottom of the container, collect the thick liquid extract and apply this on the roots of your hair regularly. Soaking your hair with a bowl of water in which Indian gooseberries have been soaked overnight is also a very useful remedy. You may also prevent premature graying by mixing two tablespoons of the juice of these berries with a teaspoon of almond oil and a few drops of lime juice and massage your scalp with this mixture every day.

For another remedy, cut a ribbed gourd into small pieces, dry them out in a cool shade for a few days and then soak the pieces in coconut oil for another couple of days. Following this, boil the pieces in two cups of coconut oil till they become charred. Collect the clear oil and massage your scalp with it every day. The butter made from cow’s milk is also effective in turning gray hair darker. You should use a small portion of this butter to topically massage your scalp, and also consume half a teaspoon of this butter orally every day.
