Hair Conditioning and Shampooing Tips

Shampooing and conditioning are integral components of any hair care regime, as they cleanse and nourish the hair and the scalp and make hair grow stronger and healthier. The frequency at which you should shampoo and condition your hair depends on its type. Dry hair naturally needs more frequent and intensive conditioning than normal or oily hair does. Prolonged exposure to sunlight, dust and pollutants also makes the hair dull and coarse, which makes it necessary for those who travel a lot to wash their hair with shampoo more frequently than those who work at home primarily. It is advisable that you use a mild herbal shampoo for washing your hair if it is thin, brittle and sensitive, as the harsh chemicals present in most commercially available shampoos can damage the hair. If you have dry hair, you should shampoo twice a week and use generous amounts of conditioner. Excessive shampooing can render your hair even drier.

A simple way of preventing this is to add an egg to the bottle of your regular shampoo and shake it well to mix the contents well. Store this mixture in the refrigerator and use it regularly to wash your hair. It is also useful to apply the pulp of a ripe banana or avocado on dry hair 20 minutes before shampooing. This naturally moisturizes the hair and makes it soft and silky. If you have normal hair, shampooing and conditioning your hair thrice a week should be sufficient. You may soak your hair in some apple cider vinegar after shampooing and let it soak the scalp for 5 minutes before rinsing your hair finally with water. This gives your hair a natural bounce without rendering it dry and frizzy. Also, mix a tablespoon of honey and an egg thoroughly till the mixture becomes frothy and use this as a conditioner.

If you have oily hair, you should shampoo your hair every alternate day in order to wash away the excessive sebum that accumulates on your scalp. You should use conditioner sparingly for such hair. While using conditioner, apply a small amount around the middle of the hair shaft and move your fingers downwards till the tips of the hair. This will prevent adding to the oiliness of the scalp. It is also recommended that if you have damaged hair, you should apply some almond oil to it half an hour before shampooing and conditioning.

Natural Hair Conditioners

There are many good hair products available in the market which can help to treat and prevent all kinds of hair problems, but nothing works as well as the home remedies using natural ingredients. There are several ingredients in the kitchen which can be used to make very good home-made conditioners which do not cost the earth and are just as effective as the expensive branded conditioners available in the market.

One of the best natural conditioners can be made with Avocado. The fruit of Avocado is rich in proteins and vitamins and can be consumed as a fruit itself for improving the texture of the hair. But it can also be made into an excellent conditioner by mashing a slightly over-ripe fruit with 1 small jar of mayonnaise till it is evenly mixed. This can be applied on the hair, covering the strands fully from the roots to the tips. The mix should be allowed to stay in the hair, which can be covered with a shower cap, for 20 to 30 minutes before washing the hair. For very long hair, the paste can be applied only on the ends and for deep conditioning a warm towel can be used instead of the shower cap, to enable to skin of the scalp to absorb the vitamins better.

Instead of mayonnaise, some coconut milk can also be used in combination with an avocado since coconut is also rich in essential nutrients beneficial for the hair. If avocados are not available in the market, simply applying a dollop of mayonnaise in the hair around ½ an hour before washing it is also an excellent solution for naturally conditioning the hair.

Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment

Another good conditioner for deep conditioning can be prepared using 1tsp of carrier oil like sweet almond oil or jojoba oil and a few drops of essential rosemary oil. This should be mixed well, heated slightly and massaged gently into the scalp and dampened hair and washed off after 20 to 30 minutes. Egg yolks can also be used to make natural hair conditioners. The yolk of an egg can be whipped together with 2 tsp of castor oil and this paste should be massaged into the hair and left for around ½ an hour before the hair is washed. Alternately the egg yolk can be whipped with 1 tsp baby oil and 1 cup water, or even with an avocado. These conditioners are very good for nourishing the hair from the roots and leave the hair soft and shiny.
