A good hair growth diet should include the following:

• Your daily diet should include foods like liver, yeast, lentils and wheat gram, which are very rich in proteins. This will help your body to produce healthy hair cells. These foods also help in supplying Vitamin B that is very important for hair growth.

• Eating green leafy vegetables, raw oats, meat, whole grain cereals, eggs, raisins, dates and cherry juice will provide your body with iron and calcium. These help in reducing hair fall and make your hair stronger from the roots.

• Have a low fat diet as fatty foods increase the rate of hair loss.

• Tofu, soymilk, fish, beans and yogurt are also good source of protein, which will stimulate the hair growth. Thus comprising of a healthy diet for hair growth.

• An intake of Vitamin A is very necessary for your hair as it helps in making your scalp healthy. If your scalp is healthy then your hair is bound to be healthy and grow well. Carrots, low fat cheese, salted butter, oysters, fish and lentils are a good source for Vitamin A.

• Drink about 8 to 10 glasses of water everyday to keep your hair well hydrated.

• Silica is another very useful nutrient to strengthen you hairs and enhance its growth. You can add organic silica to your shampoo and use it to wash your hair. Foods such as sprouts, peppers, asparagus, cauliflower, green vegetables, sunflower seeds, rice, strawberry, onions and cucumbers have a good amount of silica in them.

• The essential vitamins that help in hair growth can be found in some foods such as Sunflower seed, peas, Rice barn, whole grains, avocado, and dark green vegetables. Seafood, dairy products, broccoli, oranges, melon, lemon, apricot, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe and squash also form part of a diet for hair growth.

While the diet for healthy hair may be more or less similar for all people, each person’s hair type differs and would require extra supplements of say, a particular Vitamin found in certain kinds of food. Since you have not mentioned your hair type, the remedies here will be of a general nature, uniform to all kinds of hair.

Healthy Hair Diet

  • Hair is made up of protein; hence it makes sense to consume a protein rich diet which includes fish, cheese, milk, yogurt, eggs, nuts, cereals, beans and lean meat.
  • Soya proteins are also believed to strengthen hair, prevent split ends and keep the hair from getting brittle, and can be consumed three of four times a week.
  • Sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, squash, and apricots are high in Vitamin A, and will aid in maintaining a healthy scalp.
  • Yogurt, liver, and whole grains contain a certain acid that is known to prevent or at least keep in check hair’s propensity to grey.
  • Vitamin B is known to nourish the scalp and strengthen the hair follicles while also preventing premature greying.
  • You can include nuts, seeds: sunflower seeds in particular, beans, legumes, egg yolk, wheat, and red rice in your diet to get your necessary Vitamin B supplement.
  • Oranges, lemons, limes, berries, and melons are citrus fruits which are rich in Vitamin C and help in the absorption of iron in your body are a necessary part of your diet.
  • It would also be prudent to include avocados, rice bran, olive oil, sprouts, figs, onions, garlic and ginger to your diet. While providing the necessary Vitamin E that helps maintain a healthy skin tone and hair, onion and garlic contain bioflavonoids and are also excellent antioxidants.

Hair Nourishment

Hair nourishment also comes from oiling the hair and massaging the scalp, which in turn strengthens it at the roots. You may use coconut, almond or olive oil which is slightly warm on the scalp and can shampoo it away in an hour or so. It would, however, be advisable to keep the oil on overnight to allow the oil to soak in thoroughly. Drink plenty of water, at least 5-6 litres a day to keep your body and scalp hydrated. A necessary precaution to take when you step out into the sun is to cover your hair with a scarf as the dust, grime and harsh rays of the sun can make it brittle and unhealthy. Use a mild shampoo on your hair and avoid brushing it when wet and blow drying, as it can cause the hair follicles to weaken and break easily.
