Hair Loss Tips - How to Treat Hair Loss Problem

Friday, September 18th, 2009

It is normal to lose up to 100 strands of hair every day, but when the rate of hair loss exceeds its normal limits, bald patches start appearing on the scalp. The primary reason behind hair loss is the deficiency of certain essential nutrients like vitamin B6 and folic acid in the diet. Prolonged illnesses such as typhoid, influenza and anemia may also cause hair loss. Exposure to radiation therapy is also responsible for hair loss in cancer patients. Stress and anxiety are also common causes behind hair loss.

Remedies for preventing hair loss

There are quite a few simple home remedies for solving this problem. Ensure that you wash your hair regularly with a mild herbal shampoo and conditioner. A clean, healthy scalp is a necessary precondition for strong hair. After washing your hair, massage your scalp for 5-10 minutes using your fingertips. This is an excellent way of stimulating the hair follicles and the sebaceous glands that lie beneath the scalp and thereby promoting faster, denser growth of hair. You should also massage the roots of your hair with mildly heated castor oil twice or thrice a week at bedtime, and wash your hair the next morning. This enhances the rate of hair growth. You should also consume a mixture of spinach and lettuce juice at breakfast every morning to stop excessive loss of hair. Alternatively, mix equal portions of the juice of alfalfa leaves and carrot juice and drink a cup of this mixture every morning.

Chewing a few fresh curry leaves in the morning and using generous amounts of these leaves to flavor cooked food is also an effective natural means of preventing hair loss. Crushing the leaves of amaranth and applying their juice on the scalp regularly is also known to promote faster hair growth. If you are losing hair in patches, grind together some lime seeds with whole black pepper, add a little water to this powder and massage the affected areas on the scalp with this paste. This produces a mildly irritating sensation as it effects greater blood circulation in the scalp. Follow this remedy every day half an hour before washing your hair to observe a significant reduction in hair loss in a few weeks. Similarly, rubbing the bald patches with a thin slice of freshly cut onion stimulates the hair follicles and promotes hair growth. The area should be massaged with a little honey after the application of onion juice.

What Causes Hair Loss and Hair Loss Tips

Though losing hair is a natural body process, when the rate of loss exceeds the normal level, it may cause thinning of hair and subsequently baldness. The main causes for hair loss are nutritional deficiencies, dandruff, insufficient conditioning of hair, hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause, and gradual drying up of the hair follicles with age. Overexposure to environmental pollutants and to heat and sun can also lead to hair fall. Repeated stress and damage to the hair follicles due to chemical treatments can destroy the follicle and increase hair loss. Stress and heredity too are key factors.

You must follow a proper and regular hair care regimen to prevent hair loss. Do not shampoo your hair too often unless it is exceptionally oily. Wash your hair 2-3 times a week as this is sufficient to keep it clean without making it too dry. Do not use hot water to wash your hair, and make sure that you always use a mild shampoo that suits your hair type. Also, condition your hair after shampooing it but do not brush or comb your hair too vigorously as wet hair is extremely delicate. Instead, after a shower, massage your scalp with your fingers to increase blood circulation in your scalp and thereby encourage hair growth. Besides, you should also include natural sources of proteins and vitamins in your diet, such as whole grains, raw fruits and vegetables, nuts and milk products.

Home Remedies to Cure Hair Loss

Besides these general measures, you should also follow a few home remedies to cure hair loss. Massage your hair with coconut oil or olive oil on a daily basis. You may also mix the juice of a lemon to a few spoons of coconut oil and apply this on your hair to prevent hair loss.

For another remedy, crush a few coriander leaves and apply the juice on your scalp before taking a shower. You can also make a hair tonic by boiling small pieces of Indian gooseberry in coconut oil for some time. Store this solution in a container and use it regularly on your hair for a marked reduction in hair loss. Another popular method to stimulate hair growth and make the roots of your hair stronger is to use castor oil to massage your scalp thrice a week. You could also make a strengthening pre-wash conditioner by adding a tablespoon each of cinnamon powder and honey to warm olive oil and applying this on your hair 15 minutes before washing your hair. A paste made by grinding together lime seeds and black pepper into a fine powder and then adding some water or honey to it is also another useful remedy for hair loss.
