Men and women both have equal amount of hair on their bodies, however men’s hair is more pronounced and denser, primarily due to the natural effect of testosterone. However, some women do have hair on certain parts of the body like the face, and this can be a major cause of concern to them. There are many reasons for facial hair growth. To some extent, facial hair may simply be a natural result of differences between individuals. However, hormonal changes during puberty, menopause, pregnancy, irregular periods, stress, medication, and heredity can cause excessive growth of facial and other body hair. In such cases, it is important to determine the underlying cause, rather than simply removing the hair.

There are several ways to get rid of facial hair – waxing, plucking, threading and bleaching are some options, but these aren’t permanent solutions. Then there are treatments like electrolysis. These are more permanent treatments, but they are expensive and can also have side effects.

Remedies to Removing Facial Hair

Instead of these harmful, expensive or painful treatments, one can effectively remove facial hair with the use of home remedies. One of the most preferred remedies is applying a paste made of gram flour, turmeric and a little water on the face. Keep the pack on your face till it dries, then gently scrub the paste off with your finger tips, working in a circular motion. This will get rid of the facial hair in a short time. You can also replace water with curd or milk cream and use the paste in a similar fashion. Another very effective face mask is a paste of sugar, lemon and water. Apply this paste in the direction of the hair growth. Let it stay for about 15 minutes and then wash it off. Use this face mask twice a week to get rid of facial hair permanently. Another effective peel is blending one egg white with half a tablespoon of corn flour and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Apply the paste to your face, let it dry, and then gently peel it off. You need to do this 3-4 times a week to see desirable results.

Even if you are unable to get rid of the hair on your face, you can make it less noticeable by bleaching it naturally. Lemon juice is a product used for this purpose, as it contains natural bleaching agents. Make your own bleach by taking one tablespoon of lemon juice and four teaspoons of honey in equal proportions. Apply this mix on your face in the direction of the hair growth, and leave it on for about 15 minutes before washing off with lukewarm water. Follow this procedure everyday.

Excessive and prominent growth of facial hair in women is known as hirsutism. Though men and women both have equal number of hairs, women’s hair is not as thick and dense as men’s, as it is the male hormone testosterone that makes facial hair coarser and more conspicuous. However, when there is a hormone imbalance in a woman’s body, she may also begin to have thicker facial hair, which often becomes a cause of social embarrassment. Such hormonal changes generally occur during puberty, pregnancy and menopause. Irregular periods, stress and anxiety, regular consumption of steroids and hormone pills may also lead to hirsutism. Genetics is also a key factor.

How to Get Rid of Unwanted Facial Hair

There are several ways of getting rid of unwanted facial hair. Plucking, threading, waxing, bleaching, shaving and laser treatment are all mechanical ways of removing facial hair and may damage the skin in the long run. However, there are also many simple home remedies that can effectively cure hirsutism. Make a face pack by mixing gram flour and turmeric powder in equal portions and then adding a little water to this. Apply this paste on your face and wait till it dries before gently rubbing it off. Follow up with a cold water rinse.  You can apply a spoon of yogurt to your face prior to your cold water rinse. This will keep your skin soft and moisturized.

You could also make a natural bleaching solution by mixing a tablespoon of lime juice with two teaspoons of honey. Apply this on your face every evening or just before you go to bed. While lime juice gradually lightens facial hair, honey moisturizes the face and keeps the skin taut and glowing. If your facial hair is especially coarse, you may also add a pinch of sugar to this mixture and rub this in slow circular motions against the direction of hair growth. Wash your face after 10 minutes. Alternatively, make a natural hair removal face scrub by blending an egg white, a tablespoon of sugar and half a tablespoon of corn flour till it assumes a thick consistency. Apply this paste evenly to your face. As this paste begins to dry, your skin will feel stretched and tight. Rub the paste off gently with your fingertips. Gently wash your face with lukewarm water. Follow this procedure 3-4 times a week for best results. Regular application of a paste made by mixing turmeric powder and milk is also useful in softening facial hair and gradually removing it.
