Causes of Flaky Scalp

Skin cells are shed from the scalp as part of the normal process of cell renewal. However in some cases, there may be excessive flaking of the scalp. An example of such flaking is dandruff. Dandruff is believed to appear due to a fungus called malassezia. This fungus lives on the scalp of some individuals. Certain factors may cause excessive growth of the fungus and flaking of the skin occurs. These factors include stress, hormonal imbalances, excess oil production and suppressed immunity. Some neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and chronic conditions such as heart disease and stroke can also result in overgrowth of the fungus.

Poor hygiene and irregular shampooing of the hair could also lead to dandruff. Dandruff may even have a hereditary connection and tends to run in families. Flaking of the scalp can also be associated with skin conditions such as psoriasis and infections. Dandruff is not a serious problem and is not contagious. There are times, though, when the dandruff can become a serious concern as there is intense itching. In some cases, areas of flaky skin may appear also on the face and other parts of the body. This is a type of eczema known as seborrheic eczema. Other causes of scalp flaking include weather changes, excessive use of hair care products, sunburn and scalp folliculitis.

Individuals with flaky scalp must make certain changes in the hair-care regimen. The hair must be regularly washed with a mild shampoo. Conditioning is an effective flaky scalp treatment as it helps to prevent dryness of the scalp. However shampooing the hair too frequently can strip the scalp of its natural oils. Heat can cause irritation of the scalp and hence hot showers and heat styling appliances should be avoided. A beneficial treatment for dry flaky scalp is an oil massage. Massaging the scalp helps to improve the blood flow to the scalp and also helps to unclog blocked skin pores. Olive oil constitutes a good dry flaky scalp treatment. You may apply some olive oil to the scalp and the wrap a towel around the head. Rinse and shampoo after half an hour. Lemon juice can be used as an effective itchy flaky scalp treatment. Mix a few drops of lemon juice with the juice of gooseberry and apply this every night for relief from flaking and dryness of the scalp. Massaging the scalp with curd also helps to reduce scalp flakiness.

Causes Of  Itchy Flaky Scalp

An itchy flaky scalp can be extremely annoying because of the constant urge to scratch which makes the skin of the scalp shed white flakes, lending to a very shabby and dirty appearance. There are many reasons for the problem of an itchy flaky scalp but the most common reason is the use of harsh hair care products which are loaded in chemicals like propylene glycol and sodium laureate sulphate which are also used for industrial purposes.

Apart from this, lack of proper hygiene, certain skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis and exposure to the harmful effects of the sun, wind and pollution can also lead to this problem. It is important to keep the hair clean by washing it twice a week using a shampoo that is mild and pH balanced. Apart from this, there are a few other home remedies which are very effective in controlling and treating the problem of a dry and flaky scalp.

Treatment For Dry Flaky Scalp Using Home Remedies

Apple cider vinegar is excellent for dry flaky scalps. A diluted mix of apple cider vinegar and water in the proportion of 2:1 with a few drops of essential oils such as chamomile, rosemary or lavender can be used to rinse the hair after washing it. The rosemary and lavender essential oils are beneficial for dry hair and dry scalp while the vinegar leaves the hair squeaky clean. If the itching and flakes are excessive apple cider vinegar can be applied to the scalp in its undiluted form and allowed to soak into the skin for ½ an hour before washing the hair. The diluted apple cider vinegar can also be stored in a spray bottle and kept for later use whenever the problem returns.

Another excellent home remedy for dry flaky scalp involves fenugreek seeds. 2 tbsp fenugreek seeds can be allowed to soak in a small bowl of water overnight and ground to a paste the following morning. This paste applied to the scalp and left for approximately 30 minutes and washed off with a shampoo made with soap nut is effective in treating dry scalp and dandruff problems. This treatment can be followed up with a lemon water rinse. The juice of 1 lemon can be squeezed into ½ bucket of water and the water used to rinse the hair after washing the hair with a mild, natural based shampoo.
