Several people, especially women, spend hundreds of dollars every year, in an endeavor to use the best shampoos, conditioners, serums for healthy hair. In addition to using such products it is very common for women to use home remedies too. However, it is important for everyone to realize that using good shampoos, conditioners and hair products on their own is not sufficient. Health and hair experts state that in order to improve the health and the texture of a person’s hair, it is absolutely essential for the person to follow a diet for healthy hair. Just like all other parts of the body, the hair requires vitamins, minerals, nutrients and water, in order to grow properly.

Foods and Nutrition for Healthy Hair

There are many people who add a multivitamin tablet, or other dietary supplements, to make up for the lack of nutrition in their diet. While these dietary supplements may work for a while, they cannot act as a substitute for foods for healthy hair. Therefore, in order to provide the adequate nutrition for healthy hair, it is important make a few dietary changes that can be followed on a long term basis. It is best to include a higher amount of foods for healthy hair to the diet, which will improve the texture of the hair to a great extent and will also maintain the hair. Given below are some of the foods that should be included in a diet for healthy hair:

Dark green vegetables: Most vegetables are extremely high in vitamins and minerals, as well as other essential nutrients, which are required by the hair, to grow properly.

Salmon: Since this type of fish is loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin B, it repairs damaged hair and further promotes hair growth.

Beans: Apart from protein, most beans are very high in iron, biotin and zinc. Therefore, three or more cups of lentils a week can make the hair healthier.

Eggs: Many women apply eggs in different forms on their hair, for conditioning purposes. However, eggs are high in protein, Vitamin B12 and biotin, all of which can improve the health of the hair, if consumed internally.

The foods mentioned above, which should be included in a diet for healthy hair, may not be suitable for all people. Therefore, it is best to consult a doctor before following a diet for healthy hair or making any alterations to a diet. This is especially important for those people who are suffering from any preexisting medical condition.

While the diet for healthy hair may be more or less similar for all people, each person’s hair type differs and would require extra supplements of say, a particular Vitamin found in certain kinds of food. Since you have not mentioned your hair type, the remedies here will be of a general nature, uniform to all kinds of hair.

Healthy Hair Diet

  • Hair is made up of protein; hence it makes sense to consume a protein rich diet which includes fish, cheese, milk, yogurt, eggs, nuts, cereals, beans and lean meat.
  • Soya proteins are also believed to strengthen hair, prevent split ends and keep the hair from getting brittle, and can be consumed three of four times a week.
  • Sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, squash, and apricots are high in Vitamin A, and will aid in maintaining a healthy scalp.
  • Yogurt, liver, and whole grains contain a certain acid that is known to prevent or at least keep in check hair’s propensity to grey.
  • Vitamin B is known to nourish the scalp and strengthen the hair follicles while also preventing premature greying.
  • You can include nuts, seeds: sunflower seeds in particular, beans, legumes, egg yolk, wheat, and red rice in your diet to get your necessary Vitamin B supplement.
  • Oranges, lemons, limes, berries, and melons are citrus fruits which are rich in Vitamin C and help in the absorption of iron in your body are a necessary part of your diet.
  • It would also be prudent to include avocados, rice bran, olive oil, sprouts, figs, onions, garlic and ginger to your diet. While providing the necessary Vitamin E that helps maintain a healthy skin tone and hair, onion and garlic contain bioflavonoids and are also excellent antioxidants.

Hair Nourishment

Hair nourishment also comes from oiling the hair and massaging the scalp, which in turn strengthens it at the roots. You may use coconut, almond or olive oil which is slightly warm on the scalp and can shampoo it away in an hour or so. It would, however, be advisable to keep the oil on overnight to allow the oil to soak in thoroughly. Drink plenty of water, at least 5-6 litres a day to keep your body and scalp hydrated. A necessary precaution to take when you step out into the sun is to cover your hair with a scarf as the dust, grime and harsh rays of the sun can make it brittle and unhealthy. Use a mild shampoo on your hair and avoid brushing it when wet and blow drying, as it can cause the hair follicles to weaken and break easily.
