Monday, April 19th, 2010

Having long, healthy and beautiful hair, is not an impossible dream, nor does it require expensive salon treatments and products. Patience, care and dedication are the key to grow and maintain long and healthy hair. Long hair could mean hair that it is waist-length, hip-length, knee-length or longer. Hair that is damaged will stop growing after a while. Therefore if you want long hair, you need to first ensure that your hair is healthy. You may need to cut off or trim your hair regularly, till all the damaged hair is gone. Doing so will help you to ensure that your hair grows faster and properly. Once you start off on the right note, there are other remedies that can help you realize your dream of long, hair:

Home Remedies for Growing Long Hair

  • Try deep conditioning your hair at least once a month, even if it is in great shape. If your hair is dry and damaged, you should deep condition it every week. Try a hot oil treatment, using jojoba, almond or olive oil. Another way of deep conditioning is by wetting your hair & applying conditioner, just before bedtime. Then, cover your head with a shower cap and leave the conditioner on overnight, before rinsing it off in the morning. At times, wash your hair using only cleansing conditioners as surface contaminants do not really need a shampoo. On a regular basis, try using a leave-in conditioner, in addition to your rinse-out conditioner.
  • Reduce any friction applied to your hair. Do not rub your hair with a towel vigorously after a hair wash. Instead pat your hair dry, with a towel. Moreover, avoid brushing or combing wet hair, which is more delicate than dry hair.
  • Avoid using warm water on your hair. Washing your hair with cold water makes their cuticles lay flat and less likely to break.
  • Comb your hair regularly, several times a day. Divide your hair into small sections and start combing close to the ends. Comb your hair down, in smooth long strokes, to remove any tangles. Be careful with the types of combs and brushes that you use. Use a wide toothed or an afro comb, instead of a regular fine-toothed comb. Also, 100% boar-bristle brushes reduce the breaking of hair and distribute the hair’s natural oils to the ends of the hair. Alternately, for thicker hair, use a wood-pin brush.

The health of your hair would also depend largely on your diet. It is therefore necessary to increase your intake of water, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Make sure you drink a lot of water throughout the day, to keep your body hydrated and your hair moisturized. You could also add a multivitamin to your diet, to ensure that your hair and body get their daily, required nourishment.

Natural Hair Conditioners

There are many good hair products available in the market which can help to treat and prevent all kinds of hair problems, but nothing works as well as the home remedies using natural ingredients. There are several ingredients in the kitchen which can be used to make very good home-made conditioners which do not cost the earth and are just as effective as the expensive branded conditioners available in the market.

One of the best natural conditioners can be made with Avocado. The fruit of Avocado is rich in proteins and vitamins and can be consumed as a fruit itself for improving the texture of the hair. But it can also be made into an excellent conditioner by mashing a slightly over-ripe fruit with 1 small jar of mayonnaise till it is evenly mixed. This can be applied on the hair, covering the strands fully from the roots to the tips. The mix should be allowed to stay in the hair, which can be covered with a shower cap, for 20 to 30 minutes before washing the hair. For very long hair, the paste can be applied only on the ends and for deep conditioning a warm towel can be used instead of the shower cap, to enable to skin of the scalp to absorb the vitamins better.

Instead of mayonnaise, some coconut milk can also be used in combination with an avocado since coconut is also rich in essential nutrients beneficial for the hair. If avocados are not available in the market, simply applying a dollop of mayonnaise in the hair around ½ an hour before washing it is also an excellent solution for naturally conditioning the hair.

Deep Conditioning Hair Treatment

Another good conditioner for deep conditioning can be prepared using 1tsp of carrier oil like sweet almond oil or jojoba oil and a few drops of essential rosemary oil. This should be mixed well, heated slightly and massaged gently into the scalp and dampened hair and washed off after 20 to 30 minutes. Egg yolks can also be used to make natural hair conditioners. The yolk of an egg can be whipped together with 2 tsp of castor oil and this paste should be massaged into the hair and left for around ½ an hour before the hair is washed. Alternately the egg yolk can be whipped with 1 tsp baby oil and 1 cup water, or even with an avocado. These conditioners are very good for nourishing the hair from the roots and leave the hair soft and shiny.
