Hair is constituted of a kind of protein called keratin, which is chiefly responsible for giving hair its natural strength, flexibility and luster. Thus, it is essential that your diet contains enough natural sources of protein for your hair to become strong. Excessive exposure to direct sunlight can also make hair dry and brittle. You should also avoid blow drying your hair regularly as the heat causes damage to the hair in the long run and makes it brittle. You should also avoid using too many mechanical and chemical means of styling and coloring hair such as hair rollers and curlers, dyes and gels, as they rob the hair of its natural oil and moisture content and render it brittle. As a general rule, never comb or tie your hair while it is still wet, as this creates excessive pressure on the hair roots and makes hair break easily. Use a wide-toothed comb with soft bristles to minimize the chances of injury to your hair.
Treatment for Broken Hair
There are a few home remedies that you may find useful in treating brittle hair prone to breaking easily. One of the simplest and most effective remedies to make hair grow stronger and more flexible is to beat an egg thoroughly with a teaspoon of honey and apply all over your scalp - about 15-20 minutes before shampooing your hair. Egg is a rich source of natural protein, while honey helps trap moisture, and thus this mixture serves as an excellent natural means of nourishing and strengthening the hair. Alternatively, you may blend an egg yolk with a tablespoon of olive oil and soak the damaged and broken ends of your hair with this mixture 10 minutes before taking a shower. This makes the hair shafts stronger and less prone to breaking. It is also useful to heat a small cup of extra virgin olive oil in a microwave for 20 seconds and apply it on your hair.
You should wrap up your hair with a soft, warm towel following this, and wait for at least half an hour before washing your hair. A mixture of the pulp of a ripe avocado, two teaspoons of each of mayonnaise and olive oil and two egg yolks may also be applied on the scalp and hair and allowed to set in for 20-25 minutes before being rinsed off with water. This conditions dry, damaged and brittle hair, and makes it soft and lustrous. You should follow this remedy twice a week in order to make your hair stronger.
