Caring for Ethnic Hair

Ethnic Hair

Ethnic hair is the type of hair that is found in people of African-American origin. It has the tendency to be coiled, coarse and is usually black in color. Apart from the visible differences, like the wave pattern, color and texture, there are many ethnic hair features, which are not easily visible. It is normally porous, i.e. moisture can pass through the cuticles of the hair very easily. This means that it can absorb and lose moisture easily. That is why ethnic hair is generally very dry, coarse and brittle. It also has the tendency to break, especially if any attempts are made to straighten it. The use of chemicals and heat-styling appliances only damage the hair further.

Ethnic hair requires extra care and attention to stay healthy. Hair oil is very useful in protecting the hair, as it retains the moisture in the hair, keeping it manageable and soft. There are many products that are designed specially for ethnic hair, which contain added oils and hair moisturizers. Therefore, people with such hair should choose a shampoo and a conditioner, which contain ingredients that are high in moisture. Avoid using a 2 in 1 shampoo plus conditioner on ethnic hair, as these do not suit dry hair. In fact, you should use a conditioner on ethnic hair everyday, even if you don’t shampoo it. Using a leave-in conditioner is a better option, as it hydrates and protects the hair.

Ethnic Hair Care Tips

Try the following ethnic hair care tips, to reduce any damage to your hair, improve its texture and to make it more manageable:

  • Massage your scalp regularly, to stimulate the production of natural oil. This reduces the dryness of the hair.
  • Avoid the use of hot water on your head, as it can irritate your scalp. Shower with cool to warm water instead.
  • When you wash your hair, rub it in one direction only, so as to avoid tangles. Also after washing you hair, avoid drying it with a towel as it could cause your hair to break. Try blotting the water out instead.
  • Switch to using silk or satin pillowcases when you are sleeping, as your hair will not get caught and break on them. Another alternative is trying your hair with a silk or satin scarf, before you go to sleep
  • After washing your hair, apply some oil to your scalp, while your hair is still damp. Apply the oil directly on the scalp and brush it out to the tips of the hair.
  • Do not comb your hair, when it is very wet. Wait for it to dry a bit, before combing it. Always comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb.

Use all these treatments on a regular basis and every month, try to include a protein treatment and a hot-oil treatment, for the better health of your hair.
