Frontal Baldness

Frontal baldness refers to the gradual loss of hair, mostly in men, from the forehead and the temples. This is marked by a gradually receding hairline and sometimes a patch of hairless region at the top centre of the head. Though the problem usually appears after middle age, a stressful lifestyle can trigger hair loss even earlier. As a generic problem, this kind of hair loss is called androgenic alopecia. The main reason behind this pattern of baldness in men is that the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that attacks the hair follicles, shrinks them and finally destroys them completely. Thus, hair lost due to this reason does not grow back naturally. In many cases, hair transplants are recommended as a corrective measure. Over-the-counter topical medicines are also popular as a means of restoring hair growth.

Preventing  Hair Loss and Frontal Baldness

However, there are a few natural remedies that you may find very useful in preventing and treating hair loss and frontal baldness.

  • One of the best ways to stimulate your hair follicles is to rub the scalp vigorously with your fingertips after washing your hair, till the point that your scalp feels warm and tingly. This improves blood circulation in the scalp and thereby promotes faster and denser hair growth.
  • Also, do not wear your hair too long or tie it up tightly in a ponytail, as this creates pressure on the roots of the hair at the front of the forehead and causes faster hair loss.
  • Eat a well balanced diet rich in minerals and vitamins in order to keep your hair healthy and strong. Fresh fruits, raw vegetables, whole grains and nuts are especially recommended.
  • You may also soak a handful of fenugreek seeds in a cup of water overnight, grind the seeds to a fine paste the next morning and apply it over the affected portions of the scalp. Wait for at least half an hour before washing it off with water.
  • For another remedy, massage your scalp with coconut milk and leave it on for 15 minutes before washing your hair.
  • Regular application of coconut oil to hair before going to bed also arrests hair loss.
  • You may also add a teaspoon of mustard seeds in a cup of boiling water and drink this decoction while it is still warm in order to treat baldness.
  • Topical application of a paste of red pepper and water on the scalp can also stimulate hair re-growth.

Hair Lightening Recipes - How to Lighten Your Hair Naturally

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Though commercially available hair lightening and bleaching products may prove useful in giving your hair a lighter shade, they often contain strong chemicals that may render your hair dry and brittle and ultimately lead to hair damage and loss. It is better, therefore, to opt for natural means of making your hair lighter in color.

Tips and Home Remedies to Lighten Hair

  • One of the most effective natural agents for lightening hair color is lemon juice. You should, however, be careful while using this on your hair, as the acidic nature of the juice may render your hair dry and even lead to graying if it is used in very high concentrations. To achieve a gradual and moderate lightening effect, mix a teaspoon of lemon juice in a gallon of water and soak your hair in this solution for 15 minutes every day before washing it.
  • There are quite a few other remedies that involve the combination of lemon juice with other natural substances such as olive oil and chamomile tea that you may find effective in making your hair lighter. Adding olive oil to lemon juice helps prevent the damage caused to your hair by the acidic quality of the former.
  • Using a chamomile tea-lemon juice combination to rinse your hair after shampooing is a good way of treating your hair to a mild bleaching effect. Some people also prefer to add a little lemon juice to their regular conditioner to bleach the hair lightly without causing damage to it. A decoction made by boiling chamomile flowers in water and straining the clear liquid is also an effective hair-lightening rinse.
  • For another remedy, use a few drops from a cup of cold, black tea on a few strands of your hair. If you have naturally dark hair, this would produce a lightening effect. If you are satisfied with the result, use the rest of the tea to treat your hair and naturally lighten it.
  • Another herbal remedy for lightening hair is to chop a handful of fresh rhubarb leaves and add them to 2 cups of boiling water, strain the solution, allow it to cool and then use it to rinse your hair.
  • One of the simplest ways of making your hair light naturally is to swim in a lake or a pool for half an hour and then sit in the sun and allow your hair to get dried on its own. The direct rays of the sun produce a natural bleaching effect on the hair.

Natural Cures for Head Lice | Home-made Head Louse Remedies

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Head lice are tiny parasites that grow on the surface of the scalp and feed on the blood from the skin. Head lice are highly contagious and very commonly affect kids. The primary symptom of head lice infestation, technically known as pediculosis, is the appearance of small, red, itchy bumps on the scalp that could be a cause of considerable pain and discomfort, not to mention social embarrassment. The main reason behind this problem is the lack of personal hygiene. Not washing the hair properly or frequently enough, and living in unhygienic surroundings can cause head lice. Also, people with longer hair tend to be more vulnerable to this condition. Being around a person who is already suffering from head lice exposes you to a high risk of getting head lice too.

Natural Ways to Cure Head Lice

There are a few simple home remedies that can solve this problem.

  • One of the most effective natural means of destroying head lice is lime juice. Mix two tablespoons of lime juice with an equal amount of garlic paste and apply this mixture on your hair every alternate day. Allow it to dry for half an hour before rinsing it off with cold water. The acidic nature of lime juice combined with the strong chemicals present in garlic stop bacterial growth on the scalp.
  • If you have long hair, massage it with some olive oil every night before going to bed and put on a shower cap. Let the oil soak into your hair overnight and wash your hair the next morning.
  • For another remedy, blend the yolks of two eggs with 2 tablespoons each of vinegar and lime juice, and massage your scalp and hair with the mixture. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse it off with water and a mild shampoo.
  • You could also soak a handful of almonds in water overnight, grind them to a fine paste the next morning and apply this uniformly over your scalp. After an hour or so, rinse your scalp and hair thoroughly with water.Follow this remedy twice a week to get rid of head lice.
  • An effective herbal remedy for head lice is to grind a handful of fresh margosa leaves and apply the pulp on the scalp an hour before washing the hair. For better results you may also grind some basil leaves together with the margosa leaves and follow the same procedure. The antimicrobial property of both basil and margosa leaves cures head lice naturally.

Grayness

The state of hair is influenced and shaped by diverse factors. Everyone desires shiny, lustrous hair which glows with health. Grayness is also a growing concern with individuals resorting to all kinds of measures to hide or remove those graying strands. One has to realize and accept that graying has a lot to do with the genes that we have inherited. You will find that people can begin to experience graying of their hair at a really early age. It is not just older people who have to tackle this problem. This is essentially because genetics has an extremely large role to play in graying. Premature graying is a problem which worries a lot of people. Our hair tends to lose its shine on account of roughness and this is influenced by things like the way we handle our hair, and the elements that our hair is exposed to. For instance, if you have used hair color in an attempt to get rid of or hide gray hair, your hair might end up becoming rather delicate and possibly damaged. This is because hair color, although it might look good and fashionable, can have an extremely negative effect on the hair that we are trying to protect.

Restore Damaged and Grey Hair

To restore the lost sheen to your hair, you will need to completely avoid, or at least see to it that exposure is minimal to, damaging hair care products and heating processes like blow drying and using a hair iron. These acts can have untold adverse effects on our hair, especially if the hair has to be subjected to this treatment many times. The addition of eggs to your usual shampoo can give it that much needed sheen. Do modify your choice of food such that you eat healthier, which will reflect in the condition of your hair.

Curing gray hair, however, is an extremely debatable topic. While you will find an array of products like creams, herbal powders, serums and so on that all claim to be the sole cure for such graying of hair, the answer is not so simple. There is no scientifically approved cure for the inevitable process of graying. What we can do, however, is try safer, more natural ways of covering such strands. It could help to use herbal products like lawsonia inermis as a solution to gray hair, since this effectively covers them. While using such measures to cover up the gray hair you have, it might be best to leave it on such hair for a longer period of time.

Hair coloring can be a tricky topic which can offer some very interesting results. One may wish to dye one’s hair for a wide range of reasons such as latest fashion, gray hair coverage to simply trying something new. However, one should always proceed with caution since hair dye has been associated with a number of problems. Even simple hair coloring options can leave your hair looking rather damaged, dry and rough. You should do your research on the product if you feel you must proceed with the hair dyeing process. The hair dye may be applied at home itself, although it might be a good idea to rope in a friend to help.

Tips for Hair Coloring

The preparation starts days before, with adequate conditioning and proper care of your hair. Your hair needs all the moisture you can provide both before the application of hair color and after it. It is always a good idea to be safe with the use of an allergy test prior to the use of the entire hair dye. It can help to use some petroleum jelly to cover parts of one’s forehead outline all the way to the back of the head, so as to prevent color from catching on one’s skin. Sectional parting makes such application of dye a lot easier as it is simpler to handle the volume of hair. One should not forget that gloves are important to safeguard your hands while applying the color and mixing it as per the given instructions. Try not to let the color from your hair drip down all over your skin by means of clips.

Hair Dye Solutions

While store bought colors can lead to damage, the damage due to unprofessional use of chemicals to dye one’s hair at home can be even worse. A lot of sites offer seemingly innocuous and simple hair dye solutions which you can whip up at home. However, you have to ask yourself whether the use of such chemicals to dye your locks will be worth it in the long run. It is generally recommended that one skip dyeing one’s hair or at least stick to more natural products. One alternative which is extremely popular in some parts of the world is the use of lawsonia inermis. This natural product can offer good coverage even over gray hair. Some recommend the use of alternatives like clove tea or a sage and rosemary mix in order to get different kinds of dyes.
