  • There are a variety of hair straightening creams and hair brushes in the market, and upon applying the cream you will have to painstakingly brush your hair from the roots down to the tips of your hair. Take care to not go without a wash for more than two days as these creams allow dirt and grime to stick to your hair and it may cause your hair to lose lustre and look dull.
  • Grate a coconut and extract its milk. Keep it refrigerated for an hour and then whisk thoroughly to collect the cream that forms on the top. Add the juice of 3-4 lemons to the cream and whisk again till you have a thick mixture. Cover up your hair with a plastic shower cap or a plastic wrap to seal it completely and leave on for an hour or two before washing it with a mild, herbal shampoo. Do remember that this will not give you poker straight hair, but will keep it down smooth taming all the unruly strands.

How to use straightening iron

The one way to obtain temporarily straight hair is by ironing at home. Divide your hair into various locks and place it on the ironing board. Cover your hair in a silk scarf and make sure the iron is at minimal temperature. Iron from top to bottom and continue till each separate lock is straight. While this is a popularly followed practise at home, it is inadvisable as the heat will damage your hair leaving it dry and brittle. You can also experience a greater deal of hair fall over time. Blow driers and straightening irons are, however, marginally less harmful than using chemicals on the hair and you can use a hair dryer along with a round brush with preferably wooden bristles.  The brush will straighten the hair without causing too much damage.<

Limp,Lifeless Hair

Limp, lifeless hair is more often than not the result of a poor diet, and of treating your hair harshly. First and foremost, avoid colouring, straightening or perming your hair. Brushing it when wet, blow drying, and tying it up right after you wash it is also a bad idea, as it will make the hair brittle and develop split ends.

Treatment for Limp Hair

  • Massage your hair with warm oil, preferably coconut jojoba or almond oil, and make sure that the scalp is massaged as well. This improves the blood circulation to the scalp, thus rejuvenating it. It will also keep you relaxed through the day. Leave the oil on overnight, and use a mild herbal shampoo on it the next morning.
  • Take one egg and beat it till there are no lumps. Squeeze half a lemon to the mixture and apply onto the scalp and each strand of hair. Cover your head with a shower cap and leave it on for about two hours. Wash the mixture off with a mild shampoo; you may repeat the shampooing process once more, if the egg smell still remains.
  • You can also tone your hair by taking a glass of mineral water and adding a teaspoon or a spoon (depending on the length of your hair) of vinegar into it. Massage into the scalp and the roots of your hair and leave on for an hour. Wash it off with water; the smell of vinegar will wear off in an hour or two.
  • Apply a mixture of coconut oil, almond oil, powdered fenugreek and castor oil to your scalp, and massage gently into the scalp using the tips of your fingers. Wash off in twenty minutes or so.

Healthy Diet for Hair

A healthy diet is also necessary to maintain the health of your hair. You will have to consume a diet rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals. Fish, lean meat, eggs, milk, yogurt, cheese, and nuts are rich in protein and fatty acids. Add a little flaxseed oil and pumpkin seeds to your daily breakfast cereal as they also provide you with the necessary fatty acids your body and hair require. Dark green leafy vegetables, seeds, nuts and peas are rich in Vitamin B and Vitamin C rich products include citrus fruits like lemons, melons and lime. Vitamin K, found in seafood, dairy products, asparagus, oatmeal, soybeans, wheat, egg yolk, and liver is another necessary component to your diet. Drink at least 10 glasses of water a day, and avoid stressful situations as it can show on your hair, leaving it limp and dull. Cover your hair when you go out in the sun to protect it from its UV rays which can damage both skin and hair.

While the diet for healthy hair may be more or less similar for all people, each person’s hair type differs and would require extra supplements of say, a particular Vitamin found in certain kinds of food. Since you have not mentioned your hair type, the remedies here will be of a general nature, uniform to all kinds of hair.

Healthy Hair Diet

  • Hair is made up of protein; hence it makes sense to consume a protein rich diet which includes fish, cheese, milk, yogurt, eggs, nuts, cereals, beans and lean meat.
  • Soya proteins are also believed to strengthen hair, prevent split ends and keep the hair from getting brittle, and can be consumed three of four times a week.
  • Sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, squash, and apricots are high in Vitamin A, and will aid in maintaining a healthy scalp.
