Home Remedies to Improve Hair Growth and Thickness

There are several home remedies that can help you attain thick long hair, but before that there are some things that you must keep in mind. The hundred brush stroke remedy despite popular opinion will only weaken the hair roots and cause undue hair loss. Use a broad toothed comb, preferably wooden as it will not untangle the hair violently and pull at its roots. Do not rub your hair vigorously after having your bath, rather gently towel dry it and avoid combing when wet. The hair is at its weakest when wet and can easily break when an attempt is made to untangle it.

As far as home remedies are concerned, you can massage your hair with coconut oil or almond oil and wash after keeping it on for half an hour. Massage gently onto the scalp and down to the length of your hair to avoid split ends. Keeping the oil on overnight, and washing it the next morning will help the scalp soak up the oil and give your hair a natural and healthy glow. Dry pieces of Indian gooseberry in the shade and add to coconut oil. Heat till the gooseberry becomes a thin black mass. Strain the oil and apply it on the scalp overnight. Wash once using a gentle shampoo with minimal alcohol content the next morning.

Take fenugreek water and soak henna in it overnight, in the morning add two egg yolks and the juice of a lemon and mix thoroughly before applying onto the scalp and hair. This will naturally condition the hair, although you may want to follow it up by shampooing the hair with a mild shampoo to take away the egg smell. Powder one teaspoon of black pepper and add one teaspoon of powdered lemon juice to it. Mix thoroughly into a quarter cup of olive oil and apply on your hair. This will not only add luster to your hair but will also stimulate it to grow longer.

Tips to Improve Hair

It would do good to trim your hair every month as the hair at the end has a tendency to become thin and get damaged easily. Cover your hair when going out in the sun to protect it from harmful UV rays and other pollutants. Drinking at least 10-12 liters of water a day will keep your body and subsequently hair hydrated, and you can include food such as green leafy vegetables, sprouts, fruits, whole grains, cereals, nuts and other milk products to your diet.

Causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition, commonly called dandruff, which is caused by extreme oiliness leading to red, patchy, and itchy skin. This problem is caused by excessive production of sebum, fungal infections, stress, and due to certain nutritional deficiencies. When the condition affects the scalp, it causes inflammation and irritation thereby damaging the hair follicle and leading to hair loss. To prevent seborrheic dermatitis, it’s very important to keep the scalp clean and save it from oil, dirt, and pollution. For that, one must thoroughly cleanse the scalp with a mild anti dandruff shampoo about thrice a week and cover the head every time one steps out. Fortunately, hair loss induced by seborrheic dermatitis is not permanent. Once the problem is cured, the hair grows back normally. So, to prevent hair loss, it is important to treat dandruff first.

There are many ways to prevent dandruff and subsequent hair fall. Other than keeping the scalp clean, it’s important to maintain a balanced diet, avoid unhealthy food, keep stress and tension at bay, get enough sleep, and nourish the hair. So, one must consume green leafy vegetables (especially spinach), raw vegetables, and fresh fruits (especially apples and oranges) on a daily basis.  One can also consume two to three cloves of garlic everyday to arrest the problem. Garlic is a natural antifungal product that deals with all kinds of infections caused by fungi. Mixing ¼ cup apple cider vinegar with a cup of water and using it as final rinse regularly also controls dandruff and conditions the hair because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Tea tree oil also has properties similar to apple cider vinegar.

One can dilute it with a base oil like coconut oil or olive oil, and apply it to the scalp. Ferment yogurt for three days and apply it 20 minutes before washing the hair to treat seborrheic dermatitis. Applying lemon juice to the scalp about 20 minutes before washing the hair is also a helpful treatment. Perhaps the most effective treatment would be mixing yogurt and the juice of one lemon, applying it and leaving it on for 30 minutes before shampooing. Yogurt will get rid of the oil and dirt, and lemon will treat the dandruff. Another remedy is chopping an onion and rubbing it on the scalp and washing it off after 30 minutes. Applying aloe vera gel regularly is also a good treatment.

How Fast does Hair Grow

Hair has always fascinated us, especially since it forms a strong indicator of our personal style and individuality. Over the course of human history, societies and civilizations have created standards and trends for people to follow. For example, the ancient Vikings usually sported long hair in both sexes, while most modern conventions expect men to have shorter hairstyles. The Egyptians often shaved themselves bald to avoid hair lice, while elaborate wigs for both men and women were the rage in European nobility a few hundred years ago!

However, many of us actually know very little about this part of our bodies. Hair is composed of keratin, a protein that gives it amazing strength. In fact, a single strand of hair can lift a hundred gram bar of chocolate! Hair is also unique in the sense that it continues to grow even after death. This growth rate remains fairly constant for every individual, at about 6 inches per year. There may be a miniscule spurt during summer, since heat can stimulate hair growth. However, this is a very minor change so keeping your head under a dryer may not be that useful. In fact, excessive heat only damages the hair by destroying keratin, which leads to split ends and hair fall. In fact, a normal person loses around 100 strands of every day as a natural cycle of re-growth. This may sound terrible, but luckily we have around 100,000 strands on the head!

Home Remedies for Faster Hair Growth

Many people believe that regular trimming can help the hair to grow faster. This is not true, though such trimming is essential in removing split ends, which keeps your hair healthy and manageable. However, there are several popular remedies that are believed to encourage hair growth. A common treatment is a gentle scalp massage using fingers to invigorate the skin and encourage blood flow to the hair follicles (roots). Sometimes, the massage can use lightly warmed oil from natural sources such as olives, almonds, or coconut. This can protect the hair and condition it, giving it a healthy shine. Hair packs are also popular to provide proteins and other nutrients directly to the hair roots. For example, a single egg with a few drops of tea tree oil can be left standing in the hair for ten minutes. While the egg provides protein, the tea tree oil is useful in preventing fungal infections of the scalp that can lead to conditions such as dandruff. Regular brushing is also believed to help hair growth, though care must be taken to dry the hair before combing it.
