Causes of Head Lice
Head lice are caused by the growth of a kind of microbes called ectoparasites at the roots of the hair on the scalp. Lice are highly contagious and spread from one person to another very easily, especially in the case of children. The primary cause behind this condition is the lack of proper personal hygiene. Head lice can cause irritation and itching, hair loss and in a few severe cases, even rise in body temperature.
Remedies to Prevent and Cure Head Lice
There are a few easy remedies that you may follow at home to prevent and cure head lice. You must always keep your scalp clean in order to prevent microbial growth at the roots of your hair. You should shampoo your hair at least thrice a week. Make sure that you wash your hair well after being to dusty or crowded places. Never share combs, hats and towels with another person, as this greatly increases the risk of infection through indirect contact with an already infected person.
Besides these precautionary measures, you could also follow a few remedies to cure head lice if you have already become infected. One of the most popular ways of getting rid of lice naturally is to slice an onion finely or crush it to a pulp, and apply the juice extracted thereby on the scalp. Leave this on for at least a couple of hours to let the strong sulfurous chemicals present in onion juice kill the parasites. Then rinse your hair thoroughly with water and a mild shampoo. Follow this process daily for three or four days to get rid of lice.
Another effective remedy for head lice is to grind a custard apple to pulp and apply this all over the scalp before going to bed at night. Use a shower cap to let the paste act on the scalp overnight. The next morning wash it away with water and shampoo. Daily application of this paste gets rid of lice and their eggs. Alternatively, you could also use the seeds of the custard apple. Dry the seeds and then powder them and then add a little fresh lemon juice to the powder to form a thick paste. Apply this paste and leave it on all night and then comb out the paste under running water the next day. This method will help to get rid of the eggs as well as the lice. You could also mix three parts of distilled water and one part of vinegar, soak a ball of cotton wool in this solution and dab the roots of your hair at bedtime. The next morning wash your hair thoroughly with water. This is a useful way of killing the eggs of lice.
