Home Treatment for dry and brittle hair

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Dry hair is not fun. Brittle, wispy, dull hair cannot be styled into any of those desirable hairstyles; neither can you leave it open for parties.  In short, you cannot do much with it. Very often, dry hair is accompanied with dandruff, which is a layer of dry, scaly skin on your scalp. These are skin cells that are trapped in the scalp by hair and have a tendency to clump together.

Before you begin treating your hair with home treatment for dry hair, it is important to understand the reasons for dry hair. High mineral content in the water; exposure to the sun, or dry, hot winds; using the dryer too much; chlorine in swimming pools; hair perms; hair dye; too much of shampooing; and harsh shampoos are just a few of the reasons why hair can become dry. There are internal factors too like prolonged illness, nutritional deficiency, medication, or cancer treatment that can cause hair to dry. Once you’ve understood and identified the reason for the dryness, you can use natural treatment for dry hair and home made treatment for dry hair to give your crowning glory that snap and shine.

Treatment for dry brittle hair: You can find plenty of solutions in your kitchen cupboard and around the house.

Nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds are rich in essential fatty acids, and eating some regularly can bring back the lost sheen.

Vinegar: Well, if you thought vinegar was just used in cooking, then think again! Just a spoon or two of vinegar while rinsing your hair can give it that shine. If you massage your hair with vinegar before shampooing, then it can help you clean away that dandruff too.

Banana and avocado: Make a pack for your hair with mashed, ripe banana and avocado, and apply it on your hair. Wash after an hour with warm water.

Beer: Another treatment for dry hair is beer. After you have shampooed, rinse with some beer to restore that shine.

Eggs: A traditional breakfast without bacon and eggs seems incomplete. But eggs are great for hair care too. Whip an egg into light warm water and apply it into your hair. Rinse out with water. You can even beat three eggs with a couple of spoons of olive or sunflower oil and a spoonful of vinegar. Leave it on for 30 minutes before shampooing for treating damaged hair.

Mayonnaise and oil are is another option for treating dry hair at home.

Home Remedy for Treating Split Ends

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Split ends? Well, ask around in your circle of friends and you will find out that most of the women have had split ends some time or the other. Trichoptlosis, as it is known, happens when the protective cuticle is broken from the ends of the hair. Split ends happen generally, when the hair is dry and brittle. Maybe you’ve colored your hair, brush your hair too often, go out in the sun regularly without covering your hair with a scarf, use a blow dryer frequently or it’s the chlorine in the swimming pool that is drying your hair and causing split ends.

When split ends happen, the strands of your hair will split into a few strands for about two or three centimeters. You can consider trimming your hair to do away with the split ends, but also look at some simple, hair treatment for split ends. Also, remember that if you don’t really need that deep brown or ravishing red tint in your hair, then do stay away from hair colors as these can damage your hair. Perms can also harm your hair - so maybe you can think of leaving your hair in its natural state. Another preventive measure is to not brush your hair when it is wet.

Home remedy for split ends: Here are a few natural ways that you can prevent and cure split ends.

•    Massage and steam your hair regularly. A couple of times a week massage your hair and scalp with warm coconut oil. Do this for 10-15 minutes before steaming the hair with a towel soaked in warm water. Squeeze the water from the towel and wrap it around your head for a few minutes. This way, the oil will seep into your scalp and improve the blood circulation. The oil glands secrete ‘sebum’ or natural oils, which is good for the hair. Rinse your hair with natural and herbal shampoos. This will reduce the dryness and prevent split ends.

•    When you go out in the sun, we suggest you drape your hair with a scarf to protect it from the sun’s rays. In the winter, keep your hair moisturized, so that it remains healthy and smooth.

•    Home made packs can be used for treating split ends. Mix a teaspoon of honey with two tablespoons of olive oil. Beat in an egg yolk and massage the mixture into your scalp. Wear a shower cap and rinse and shampoo after half an hour.

•    Another treatment for split ends is a thorough massage with warm olive or avocado oil. After you’ve done that, wrap your hair in a towel and leave on the oil for a few hours or overnight before washing with vinegar and water.

Natural Hair Growth Tips

Natural hair growth varies from person to person. For some individuals, hair growth may be rapid, while for some, hair growth is very slow. It is also very normal to lose about 35-75 strands of hair every day. Our hair is constantly growing, and this way, lost strands are replaced by new ones.

A healthy hair care routine, a good stress-free lifestyle and nutritious food are important for fast hair growth. Let us look at the type of diet you should have for quick hair growth and healthy and shiny hair.

Diet and nutrition for hair growth: Nutrition is very important for overall health. You need a balanced diet and a good lifestyle to keep that crowning glory firmly rooted to your head. Lack of nutrients or too much of stress can often lead to hair fall or slow hair growth.

Protein: Protein is made up of amino acids, which are very important for the formation of new cells and that includes hair. Lysine, arginine, methionine, cysteine and cystine are the five amino acids that are important for hair growth. If you do not eat enough protein, your hair growth might slow down drastically and finally lead to hair fall. So, make sure that you include legumes, nuts, lentils, eggs, chicken, meat, and fish in your diet.

Carbohydrates: Well, yes, a lot of people believe that carbohydrates are fattening, but some portion of it is necessary for the growth of tissues in the body. The vitamin B in carbohydrates is important for healthy hair growth. So include non-refined carbohydrates in your diet.

Fats: Fat from animal sources and plants is necessary for overall health and hair growth. So, while you don’t need to stuff up on fatty food products, a little bit of it in your diet is important.

Vitamins and minerals: We don’t need to tell you this – fruits and vegetables are ever so important for glossy and healthy hair. So, stock up on those fruits and veggies.

Diet tips for hair growth: Also remember that crash diets or starving yourself will lead to hair fall or lack-luster hair. Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy lifestyle for healthy, long hair.

Home made hair growth treatment: Mix Fenugreek, black beans, coconut oil and lemon juice to make a hair tonic/pack to prevent hair loss and for quick hair growth. Massage this pack into your scalp and rinse with an herbal shampoo after a few minutes.

Use herbal hair products with Gooseberry extracts for quick hair growth.
